Rediscovering Life Through Memoir
The Starting Point
An older adult experiencing early memory difficulties and mild symptoms associated with cognitive decline came to HMIP to preserve his life story. His family also hoped to capture important memories before more of them became difficult to retrieve.
The HMIP Journey
Photos, letters, records, and family materials were organized into a structured archive. Guided interviews and memoir writing encouraged him to recall experiences, explain relationships, and reconnect with meaningful chapters of his life.
The Change
During the project, he became happier and more actively involved in daily activities. Family interaction increased, and the memoir process gave him a renewed sense of purpose, continuity, and personal dignity.
Outcomes
- A well-developed memoir book for family and community use
- A structured life archive and personal history resource
- Greater emotional well-being and daily engagement
- A valuable future-care asset helping caregivers understand his identity, values, relationships, and preferences
