Intersection of AI and Healthcare
October 21, 2019
The September RMDS MeetUp was a great success, as we had our partner Brix Labs present and received a great lecture from Dr. Mingfeng Yang, who discussed applications for machine learning within business. His numerous examples and demonstrations of Brix Labs technologies were particularly fascinating.
This October, let us discuss the applications for artificial intelligence in healthcare via an in-depth discussion of these intersecting fields. On October 21st, we will host our meetup at the lovely New School of Cooking here in Pasadena.
First, we will see a keynote presentation by Dr. Priyanka Mathur who will discuss the emergence and evolution of AI in healthcare, as well as recent developments. Next, we will hear from a panel discussing healthcare and AI and featuring both data science experts and medical professionals, such as Dr. Anna Farzindar, Dr. Sneha Verma, Martin Devon, Dr. C Charles Lin, and Daniel Zahler.

We look forward to your attendance and participation in this fascinating discussion!
Refreshments will be provided.
How AI and ML can be applied to daily business tasks
September 24, 2019
Right now, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are positioned in an increasingly enticing proposition. They are being leveraged by businesses in various sectors as a vital competitive advantage-having the potential to assist in every aspect of the business, such as major scientific and medical breakthroughs. The event invites the expert in the AI and machine learning fields, Xiaohui Xie, as the guest speaker to discuss the scope of applications and the future of these technologies. The forum will help you understand what AI and ML can do for you.
Xiaohui Xie is a full-time professor in the Department of Computer Science at UC Irvine since 2007. He received his PhD from MIT, and completed his postdoctoral training at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Professor Xie is also the co-founder of the tech startup Brix, which focuses on AI & data science consulting and software development.
Evolution of Machine Learning
August 20, 2019
For our next event, let’s meet together in the Hameetman Auditorium at the California Institute of Technology and talk about Evolution of Machine Learning with Nick and Jorge from Big Squid. They will also include an exciting live demo in the presentation!
Nick is the Vice President of Product & Engineering at Big Squid, overseeing the development and execution of the firm’s machine learning software platform. He has been in the analytics field for over 17 years, developing quantitative applications to enhance decision-making capabilities across a variety of fields. He has been with Big Squid since 2015, holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, AB from Dartmouth College, and is a former member of the Chicago Quantitative Alliance.
Jorge Zuloaga is the Senior Director of Data Scientist in Big Squid. He earned his MS in mathematics from the University of Waterloo and PhD in computational physics from Rice. His work includes particle physics & quantum plasmonics. After academia, he focused on ML applications in healthcare.

NASA Earth-Observing Satellite Data Analysis
June 12, 2019
There are thousands of satellites moving around the earth, which collect huge amount of data suitable for various kinds of analysis. Almost 100 members gathered today to hear directly from a NASA JPL leading scientist Hui Su about this treasure trove of data sets. She talked about how to analyze them to produce great impacts like predicting climate change and natural hazards. Join our Meetup group to learn about research methods and data science.
